The lofty gopurams in south set new urban design element of enclosure of space

At Madurai the temple complex was not so well programmed as the Srirangam temple complex.

The lofty gupurams define the total spatial confinement in all four directions. The two temples' campuses are joined together by connecting corridor system. A thousand pillared hall gets unique placement at one edge of the complex.

Strong walled temple cities was the unitary expression in terms of scale, multple functional aspect which the Indo-Aryan temples lacked.
